Michigan Car Insurance Facts and Requirements

As a Michigan driver, you must license your vehicle, maintain a current driver's license, and carry no-fault liability car insurance in order to operate a vehicle within the state. Although these requirements are mandatory, which Michigan car insurance company or agent you choose is completely up to you, as well as how much you choose to pay for your policy.

Three required portions exist in a basic Michigan no-fault car insurance policy. These include:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP)-Pays your medical costs resulting from a car accident.
  • Property Protection (PPI) -Pays up to $1 million for damage your car does to someone else's property.
  • Residual Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability-Pays court costs and any damage for which you are responsible, up to policy limits, as a result of an accident. Minimum coverage limits are $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage.

Other optional coverages include collision, comprehensive and uninsured/underinsured motorist. Talk to a qualified Michigan car insurer to determine which, if any, of these coverages you need.

Michigan's no-fault car insurance system is the most comprehensive in the nation. Three factors contribute to this uniqueness. First, Michigan is the only state in which unlimited medical, wage-loss and rehabilitation benefits are provided for up to three years following an accident- regardless of fault. Secondly, motorists in Michigan do not have the right to sue parties involved with them in auto accidents unless someone is killed or gravely injured. Finally, unlike in other states, vehicle damage is included in Michigan's no-fault car insurance policies.

"Why do I need car insurance?"

There are two main reasons why you should purchase Michigan car insurance:

  • To assure financial and medical security in case of an accident
  • To ensure you follow state law…it is against the law to own and operate a vehicle in Michigan without obtaining basic no-fault liability insurance-and consequences could be stiff

If someone dies or is severely injured as result of your negligence while driving and you do not have Michigan car insurance, you could be sued and held personally liable. You may also be convicted of a misdemeanor and fined between $200 and $500, imprisoned for up to one year, or both. Your Michigan license may be suspended for up to 30 days, and you could be held liable for any damages resulting from an accident occurring during the period in which you were uninsured. So don't risk driving in Michigan without car insurance!

"Why should I comparison shop?"

Shopping for car insurance is not as hard as it seems. Comparison shopping works-and it saves you money! A wide variety of insurance companies and agents sell Michigan car insurance policies, so it pays to compare rates, terms and coverage to get what you need. Those companies which do not offer competitive prices must eventually either lower their rates or be satisfied with fewer customers. Sometimes the best rates and service come from companies you may not be familiar with, so don't rule out a Michigan car insurance company for this reason.

"What if I am deemed 'ineligible' for car insurance?"

Michigan law guarantees the availability of car insurance to all Michigan citizens through the Michigan Auto Insurance Placement Facility (MAIPF). If your car is registered in the state and you have a valid Michigan driver's license, you can get insurance for your car- regardless of your record. If an insurer says you are ineligible for coverage, ask him to submit your application to the MAIPF. Agents are required by state law to file for this type of car insurance upon request. Rates may be higher than in the voluntary market, but if you maintain a good payment history and driving record, you will eventually be able to move toward a more traditional Michigan insurance policy.

Information to Have Available

Be prepared to provide Michigan car insurance agents with the following information:

  • Personal information such as your name, address, phone number, Social Security number and income
  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN)
  • The purpose for which your car is used
  • Information about any safety or security devices installed in your car, such as air bags or anti-lock brakes
  • Information on your past driving record, including any tickets or accidents

Honesty is always the best policy. Knowingly concealing or misrepresenting yourself or your driving record on your Michigan car insurance application may cause denial of coverage-or, worse yet, denial of future car insurance claims. So always answer questions fully and accurately.

Reducing Your Premium

Keep the following guidelines in mind when searching for an affordable Michigan car insurance premium:

  1. Find out how much the insurance will be on a new car before you buy it
  2. Shop around before settling on a particular policy
  3. Set deductibles as high as affordably possible
  4. Don't duplicate coverages
  5. Ask about all discounts offered
  6. Inquire about policies offered through particular groups
  7. Consider dropping unnecessary coverages
