Texas has a number of regulations in place to aid the consumer. These regulations are laid out in the Texas Insurance Bill of Rights. Some that help the consumer are:
Texas auto insurance coverages required by law:
Texas requires both bodily injury and property damage coverage. A minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury coverage and $15,000 per accident for property damage must be carried.
Texas also requires you to buy personal injury protection and uninsured motorist protectionunless you reject these coverages in writing.
Texas Bodily Injury Coverage
Texans are required to buy bodily injury coverage. Bodily injury coverage is a form of liability insurance that will pay for the medical expenses, pain and suffering, and lost wages that you cause and are legally responsible for in an automobile accident. Texas’ minimum limits are $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.
Texas Property Damage Coverage
Texans are also required to buy property damage coverage as a part of their insurance. Property damage definition, but is not limited to, damage to buildings or other vehicles or their contents, and damage to road signs and other stationary objects. The minimum limits in Texas are $15,000 per accident.
Personal Injury Protection and Uninsured Motorist Protection
Personal Injury Protection and Uninsured Motorist Protection are required on your policy by the state of Texas unless you reject these in writing.
Assistance from TAIPA if You Have Been Denied Coverage
If two or more insurance companies have denied you coverage, you are eligible to apply for insurance through TAIPA (Texas Auto Insurance Plan Association). This will allow you to get coverage for the minimum amount required by law. Because of the risk factors, this coverage is often expensive, but if you maintain a clean record for three years, your assigned TAIPA insurance company must offer you a lower rate. For more information on TAIPA and the Insurance Bill of Rights, visit the Texas Department of Insurance Web site at www.tdi.state.tx.us.
